It would be interesting to hear the business case for the requirement to
transmit Word and PDF docs via the VAN.  With the availability of email,
FTP, and the web, it seems at first blush the VAN would be the least
efficient, most costly method for transmitting these kinds of data.

If, perhaps, the client merely wishes to deliver these documents
automatically, I know that some EDI systems can handle the automatic
delivery using standard internet protocols.  One of these I am very familiar
with is Softshare ECS, and I guess others could too using internet protocols
and skipping the VANs.

This was all a long time ago, but in the Odette world you could send 
technical drawings by 'EDI'; by sending the drawings as uniquely named 
binary files and in the EDI message refer to them by name and give 
information about them. The VAN's I know of are capable of transporting 
binary files, so that might be a possible approach.
