It would be interesting to hear the business case for the requirement to transmit Word and PDF docs via the VAN. With the availability of email, FTP, and the web, it seems at first blush the VAN would be the least efficient, most costly method for transmitting these kinds of data.
If, perhaps, the client merely wishes to deliver these documents automatically, I know that some EDI systems can handle the automatic delivery using standard internet protocols. One of these I am very familiar with is Softshare ECS, and I guess others could too using internet protocols and skipping the VANs. For standard FTP I have some possible work arrounds but the >VAN aspect is the most challenging part of this query. This was all a long time ago, but in the Odette world you could send technical drawings by 'EDI'; by sending the drawings as uniquely named binary files and in the EDI message refer to them by name and give information about them. The VAN's I know of are capable of transporting binary files, so that might be a possible approach.
