Somebody should be able to tell you who the document is for...
Is it internal or to be exchanged with a Trading Partner?
Are you sending or receiving it?
and of course....  what industry is it for?

If it's for a TP, then you are required to comply with their existing setup.

Normally an X12 856 can be used for detailed Shipment information.
The X12 812 is used for Debit/Credit information.
