That's incorrect. EDI files in general are human readable text, and even if
there are several examples of documents with embedded binary data - that
does not make all EDI files binary files. If you want to make the point that
everything on a computer is binary, you can- but in that case there is no
such thing as a text file, or anything other than binary files.

And on the virus subject. I would expect the "security by obscurity" factor
to be very high in this scenario. There are plenty of motivations to go
around for virus writers to do their dirty work, but generally they are
looking for a wide audience, whatever the cause may be.

Just as wiping out the tape drive on a Comodore is not much of a target
these days, attacking a program that most people have never even heard of
that processes the embedded binary data in a upc catalog update document is
*not likely*. It would be a TARGETED attack on a specific company, possibly
requiring an inside man or at least inside knowledge of the systems in
place.

99% of virus code targets common systems. This sounds like a waste of the
coder's time. :)

Hi Richard,

You can very easily include a virus into an EDI file, and is in fact a
very good environment of attack since processing EDI files are automated.

Though most users treat EDI files as text files, in actuality they are
binary files. Some documents such as HIPAA 275 4050 X150 have
mandatory BIN segments.

This link shows how a BIN segment in an EDI file is used and
processed. (You have to be a programmer, though).
http://www.edidev.com/prog_guide_web.htm, then run the 823 Price
Catalog (with Image) program.) So an easy way of introducing a virus
to your network is simply including virus files to BIN segments of an
EDI file.

If you are concerned, take the precaution.
