GinaAnne, The scenario you have described is normal, and must be expected. However, if you are having difficulty processing it that way, one of the Value Added services your Value Added Network (VAN) should offer would be to convert everything to unblocked, or blocked, as you prefer. There may be an extra charge.
The reason some people send their EDI blocked is that some systems communication protocols are based on 80 character records. In the olden days of yore, computer input was primarily done with punched cards, and these were 80 columns in length. Operating systems and communications protocols developed with this in mind, and many of them are still in use today.
