It does not run under unix, but my free 'EDICLEAN' utility - which runs 
under Windows - will do all kinds of reformatting and is totally agnostic 
about the input format (ANSI ASC X12 only, does not do EDIFACT).

If you can reach your files from a Windows machine, it's worth a look. 
(Especially at the price).
