Mercator is alive and well as WebSphere Transformation Extender 8.2.
Commerce Manager is now called WebSphere Transformation Extender Trading
Manager was just updated to release 8.2.1 a few months ago.
I'm not aware of plans to replace WTX TMgr with WebSphere Partner Gateway
but it stands to reason that IBM doesn't want to support multiple
applications in a single product niche. WTX is now offered with a WTX for
Integration Servers version for Message Broker, Enterprise Service Bus (ESB)
and Business Process Management (BPM). The only issue I have heard
regarding WTX & WMB is a shortage of personnel with the skill set to support
both products. I have had two calls this week for WTX-WMB projects, both
brand new implementations. The one WTX-WMB SOA project I worked on three
years ago didn't experience any serious issues. Support within WTX has also
been added for DataPower. Similarly, IBM has continued to update WTX EDI
support with its HIPAA pack and release of new type tree versions for X12.
What I see happening is what was apparent 3-4 years ago when IBM mapped out
the future for WTX in ND sessions. It is being positioned as the
transformation engine of choice for IBM middleware solutions, not
necessarily as a complete, freestanding EDI or middleware solution as it was
prior to IBM's acquisition. I'm sure the goal is to move new users and as
many current users as possible to the flagship products for message flow and
BPM while downplaying the WTX capabilities in that area using the Integrated
Flow Designer and Launcher (formerly called Event Server). When that might
happen, or if it it is happening now, I don't know. IBM has committed to
five years of support for current WTX implementations.
