Were doing X12 healthcare transactions, I've never done anything but healthcare
so far, but we indeed can use the 997 to communicate structual EDI errors back
to the sender.   Individual transactions within a set can be rejected and the
offending segments and position identified on the AK3 and AK4.  This is the
technical feedback I was referring too.  Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

We also do a fair amount of direct trading with partners rather than going
through clearinghouses, but I understand your point.

I'm not so sure the '997' qualifies as "technical feedback."

It's more like signing for a package from UPS: "I got your package,
apparently in good order, but I have not opened the box so I have no comment
on the contents."

Think of ANSI X12 violations" as "visible damage to package, package
rejected."

Valid ANSI X12 ==>should be an accepted transaction set, even if contents
are useless.

But if you can't even find a transaction set, TA1 is indicated.

If you can't even identify the data as an attempt at a valid interchange, I
like your automated email idea... just curious how you could know to whom to
send it.

BTW.... editing out crap like this is one of the value-added services most
VANs will perform for you... for those who think a lower cost is always a
better value.
