Well, when I go into a contract I bring one of those IG building products
with me. WHY? To make my life easier.

A 4010 manual is several hundres dollars. Multiply that by the number of
standards you need to carry with you and you need a large trailer and a
small fortune.

I have from 2002 to 5010 on my laptop, and also several versions of EDIFACT.
Does not weigh an ounce.

Hmmm... I guess I'm just too "old-school" for this... *sigh...

As the hub, I dictate what data and documents we're going to trade. And I
dictate what segments and elements must be there and "can" be there.

And I guess I'm an elitist - I use WORD for all of it...

I've got the full document specs for (in .rtf format) with all of the
segments and elements that I can include. I have the ASC X12 v 004010 book
(dating from 1997!) to research what elements and qualifiers to use or
request... I search through the document "format", delete and modify the
segment pages to show what segments and elements I require and want and
delete those that I don't want... I mark some MANDATORY and some are
OPTIONAL. I include "user notes" to explain any references that may seem odd
or could be questioned... Then I save it as a WORD doc and then convert it
to a .pdf document and send it out to My trading partners... If I need to
have a listing of the elements that can be included in a segment and what
they mean, I just look at My 12 year old book (which has a ton of
highlighted sections and notes!) and then type it into word....

I guess My EDI system is running smoothly enough that I have the time for
this slow, old-school and decidedly manual process...

Sorry, Art (and others) but I don't need or use EDISIM or EDIFECS or
SpecBuilder or any of that... I've never been one to try to justify the cost
of a "new" product - just because it's new...

But, then again, I'm also the cell phone user that just wants his cell phone
to be ... gasp! ... a phone... and the only reason I've got a car payment is
because I didn't want to subject My 8 year old PT Cruiser (daily driver and
show car) to a 120 mile roundtrip daily commute...
