Well I'm assuming you aren't asking about the PID segment itself, but
the odd usage of it.

I don't know specifically what Kmart is using it for, but it appears to
be following VICS guidelines for sending additional item detail.

The purpose is generally to define item characteristics for items that
can't be fully defined with just a UPC number, color and size code.

The best example of this, and I believe what the format was originally
created for, is jewelry. Jewelry has all kinds of characteristics (cut,
clarity, number of carats, etc.) that go way beyond what can be
described with a PO1 segment.

I used to be with a major retailer, and we used the PID segment along
with MEA, REF, etc. to identify characteristics of contact lenses.
There are all kinds of permutations that can be sent with a set of
contact lenses that have the same item number.

Anyways, the PID04 here "GM04COMPFE" is a composite value that
corresponds to the VICS guideline.

The "GM" is a merchandise type classification. My guess is it is
"General Merchandise" but that is a guess.

The "04" is a reference to whether the characteristic being defined is a
description or a measurement. I believe "04" indicates it is a
description. If it was a measurement, "03" would be used.

The "COMP" portion is an abbreviation for the specific item type.
Computer perhaps? Again, just a guess.

The "FE" is an indicator of a specific characteristic of the item that
is being described.

It's been a few years since I've spent any time with this, so take the
above with a grain of salt. My memory isn't what it used to be.

The Kmart implementation guide should spell out exactly what these
values mean. Failing that the full VICS 850 documentation should
confirm the general definition (or contradict it J) and give you more
information.

The nice thing about EDI, it is like the tax code, it is always
changing. And with those changes come questions. So there will always
be discussions.

To start off: Has anyone seen or used this segment:

PID*X**VI*GM04COMPFE*3

I found it in the Kmart EDI Guidelines. It is supposed to be included
in v6010.

Sincerely,

Everyone's still at the gym for 12 more days until we give up on that
resolution...
