I believe you are correct, I checked a few "EDI" groups on Linked In and I
don't
see much activity. Also, my email is up and running all the time, I don't
really have time to "check in" elsewhere to comment/reply. I'm sure Linked in
is very helpful for many people and many things, but so far I have not found a
good use for it myself. After all, there are lots of people who use facebook,
including two girls who got trapped in an underground tunnel of some sort and
used their ...ahem...phone....to update their facebook status to "trapped in
tunnel". Now, me, I would have used my PHONE to CALL 911, but I guess that's
too old school.

Subject: RE: [EDI-L] Link to EDI-L on LinkedIn

Taking nothing away from Skip's effort, I learned an awful lot about
managing groups by being a sysop of my company BBS and also a Compuserve
Sysop (yes, I am a member of Skip's Old Geeks. I still have my sysop
copy of TAPCIS - who else was a Compuserve junkie?)

Anyway, the rule of thumb there is that separate message areas were
split out only when the group became so unmanageable because of the
number of subscribers and the number of topics tended to drown
everything. Then you could carefully create more dedicated message
areas. I can't tell you how many bulletin boards I logged onto with
hundreds of "rooms" (or whatever you wanted to call them) each of them
holding one message; the automated "Welcome" message from the sysop.
Very sad.

On the other hand, spillover from an active, existing group ensures that
you maintain the viability and activity as the group splits.

The same thing seems to be happening with EDI affinity groups within
LinkedIn. MHO, of course.

OK. I have joined. However I wonder a little about how successful it
will be. The Yahoo group must have a couple of thousand members and even

so seems to teeter on the fringes of criticality a lot of the time. What

added value will the LinkedIn one offer?

I have joined various EDI discussion forums (fora?) over the years and
they have never been exactly buzzing with activity.

Regards
Chris
