I think our point (and I know mine) was that if you've conquered others, you
can
do this, as well. I, too, have had a lot of experience with various
translators
and some I liked and some I didn't, and all for different reasons. Also, some
are more suited to different businesses and applications.

If they've seen your resume then they're smart enough to know the above. Also,
as Art and/or Michael will remind us, it's knowing how to figure out what is
needed and then the best way to do it which is the hard/important part. The
tool is, while sometimes a gigantic stumbling block, the least part of the
picture. It's always great to have a tool suited to the job, but you can
unscrew a bolt with a coin and you can hammer a nail with a shoe if you have
enough wit and determination. (and you can do ANYTHING with duct tape!)

Let them figure out the GAP, no need to point out anything more than, "I've
learned 7+ translators with little or no help, I can learn TIE". And I'm sure
you can.

Good Luck,
Leah

Thanks! I appreciate all of your responses. Some people answered offline, &
were quite frank.

I’m a “heavy weight” with lots of experience, education and lots of EDI
projects
mostly at big name companies, so I can certainly talk to that.

I’m just lacking knowledge on TIE & want to give them a frank assessment of the
GAP.

Here are some translators that I’ve worked with:

Gentran Basic, Gentran Server, GIS, Premenos (an oldie but goodie), TLE (both
as
TLE and Harbinger), Softshare, ECtone (never made it to market), Oracle Fusion
B2B, SOA & BPEL, Trading Partner PC, etc. To me, they have not all been the
same. Softshare is very easy to map and configure with good support & much
functionality (discloser – I’m a partner). I also like Gentran Server. GIS was
difficult (perhaps it was the way it was installed at the client site, but it
was difficult to figure why a map failed, and their business modeling language
was way too convoluted for what it did. Support was sometimes great, sometimes
not-so great.). Oracle’s B2B product spits out obscure Java error messages,
and
all functions needed to be manually coded. This could have changed by now.
Trading Partner PC was designed to have data entered manually, and was not
designed for integration.

I know that I’ve worked on some others, just can’t remember the names now.

Susan,
Perhaps if you mention which other translators you've worked with some could
compare for you. Also, as I'm sure you know, the tool is the least of the
issues with EDI. If they're interviewing you without Tie experience on your
resume, I'd say they probably understand this. Don't be nervous and show your
experience to their advantage.

I've always appreciated honesty in the people I've interviewed and worked with.

Good luck!

Leah

Subject: [EDI-L] Tie Commerce

Hi Folks -

I have an interview this afternoon and the company has the Tie Commerce
translator product. I've never worked with Tie, but have worked with a
number of translators. Some are much more intuitive than others. I would
like to give the management an honest assessment of how easy or hard it
would be to get up to speed on the product. What is your experience with
the product? Does the product have Oracle Gateway extensions?

Susan
