Earl/Leah, those numbers were obviously a rough approximation and I wouldn't be silly to use that as an accurate statistical data sample. It was just based on my personal experience in few of the South-East counties in the UK. Also most people I've met are in their 20s and then early 30s, that should form the majority of the employed population. And not the least, I thought pubs are there for much more than just drowning the sorrows, at least here in the UK. Well pubs anyway are more of a British (or an Irish) thing isnt it.. --- On Tue, 2/8/11, Leah Halpin <[email protected]> wrote: From: Leah Halpin <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [EDI-L] Re: <JOBS-OFF-TOPIC> Observation To: "Earl Wertheimer" <[email protected]>, "Praveen Kumar" <[email protected]>, [email protected] Date: Tuesday, February 8, 2011, 12:23 AM Ah, but I'd imagine a disproportionately large number of the unemployed may hang out in pubs, "drowning their sorrows" as the phrase goes. Just like going to the movies in the daytime. Considering that all the staff are employed, underage youth are usually not allowed in pubs and most retired people don't drink after business hours, 30% would be very high. I fairly agree with this statement, this is exactly what a lot of small to medium size American business owners were/are concerned in terms of how the bailout will help jumpstart their sales. The underlying problem is not the money, but demand for their services. Now you have received numerous potential job oppurtunities, which may not be a reliable sign of improvement, but you head to a pub on Friday night and if 7 out of 10 people you talk to has a job, then thats one. This is how I'll measure it :-) --- On Mon, 2/7/11, Dave Records <[email protected]> wrote: From: Dave Records <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [EDI-L] Re: <JOBS-OFF-TOPIC> Observation To: "edi list" <[email protected]> Date: Monday, February 7, 2011, 10:41 PM I have held the opinion for a while that corporations are sitting on money to see what the economy does, and that there is and will be a pent-up demand for services once they start loosening the purse strings. Now that I believe we are starting to finally see some signs of life, the purse strings are loosening up!
