I was hired by a contractor to fix nearly 100 maps that have had several hands in them already. Many of them I have simply started over, but not without checking the extended rules they employed. Defaults used for the application side of the map must be taken into account in order to assure that the translated file posts correctly. Also, I check the pre- and post processing of files to be translated in order to see what becomes of the data after the translation. On several occasions I have found that the problem lies in them and not the map.
I agree with Leah that fixing someone else's mistakes will take a lot longer than starting over so I charge by the hour and bill accordingly. I provide a log of my work and the progress I have made. I also find out which maps need to be done when so the client can plan accordingly. It very much depends on the translator, industry, part of the country, world, current economic conditions, etc. One thing, if you're trying to start your own business, be sure you charge more to "fix" someone else's mistakes than to do something yourself, it's going to take you a lot longer to decipher what someone else has done. In fact, more than once, instead of trying to "fix" a map, I just wrote a new one, it took a lot less time and effort. I'll be very interested to see what other kind of answers you get. I normally work on an hourly basis and charge $90.00 per hour. Sometimes I give clients a maximum amount to install a new map, so they have an upper limit and know that the charge will not exceed the quoted price.
