Through Outdated Trading Partner Data!

Alan,

Your response still didn't address the core issue of keeping updated and the
subject question of outdated TP data.

If have an active TP and that same TP changes their ID and doesn't notify me
- shame on them AND my next EDI transmission won't go to the correct
destination OR it will error out completely either upon receipt by the TP or
to my VAN or the VAN interconnect.

If have an active TP and that same TP changes their ID and notifies me AND I
don't update my TP setup, - shame on me. My transmission will error out
either at receipt by the TP or at the VAN or the VAN Interconnect.

But in either case, either I don't receive a 997 or the TP will notify me
that I have sent it using the wrong Id.

And I have had this happen literally only once in 10 years - but according
to your service, that would have helped me prevent that to a tune of at
least $799 (more if I had more than one ID to register).

The only way I can see this service really preventing any of the above
issues is if somehow, I update my EDI software to automatically connect to
your service and perform an ectronic check EVERYTIME I create an outbound
transmission or even just once a day. But I saw nothing on your site that
allows me to do that.

As a true EDI professional knows, it is our responsibility to keep our
systems updated and current. I personally check with my TP's every 6 months
just to see if any contacts or related information has changed. I also have
the responsibility to notify every one of my TP's when I am making a change
to one of my specs, have any sort of system down time that will affect
sending or receiving EDI and especially if I'm going to be changing or
adding a new TP id.

Also there are significant LEGAL ramifications involving business agreements
when a TP makes the sort of changes or additions with an EDI Id you are
indicating your service is for and doesn't clearly convey those changes to
EVERY ONE of their active trading partners.

And as Leah indicated, you may have sought out the wrong group to try and
present your 'message' to. Our employers pay us our salaries to do my job,
correctly and in a timely basis. In the rare event that something happens
regarding a TP Id, it is addressed very quickly and easily.

I guess, like many others on this list, I'm not really seeing the value of
having to spend $79.97/year/Id to register my own ID's and then have to
manually check your site every day, week or month to check to make sure my
TP's have updated their own id's or added new ones, when that is an
expectation I already have they will update me for free.

Perhaps if you can provide a list who (what companies) in the top Fortune
1000 have already signed up for your registry, that can help tell us if some
of the industry leaders are using your service. I can't tell that from your
site that any well known companies are already using it and that would
surely be a BIG selling point.

Subject: Re : [EDI-L] [ANSWERS] Stop Spending Time and Money Digging Through
Outdated Trading Partner Data!

Hi group,
Thanks for sharing all your comments and questions about WhoisEDI.
First of all, I noticed that most of questions/comments seem to be caused by

misunderstanding the vocation of WhoisEDI. To make it short, WhoisEDI is
there
to help. All suggestions or comments to clarify that point are always
welcome.
You can use the “contact us” link on the WhoisEDI web site
(www.whoisedi.com) to
communicate with us any time.

So let’s begin!
Ken asked: “Is this a sales related email or is the service free?”.
Answer: This was a sale related email. Unfortunately the [SALES] tag was not

included in the subject by Phillipe. I apologize for that. Rest assures that

it will be included with any other sale post. The cost of $79.97 per
identifier
per year gives access to all features.

Leah says: “In my experience "Avoid sending business-critical documents to
the
wrong EDI address!" is very seldom the issue.”
Answer: You are right. But when it occurs, it is costly and cumbersome. Let
say
you want to use a new EDI ID. You check with your VAN to make sure it is not

already used. Your VAN CANNOT be aware if the ID exists on any other VANs
since
VANs keep there clients info in private internal database. You may find
later,
when you will need an interconnect, that the ID was already used by another
company.
Jason asked: “And, "With your self-maintained....", what value is this? I
have a
"self

maintained" list on the server, in an excel spreadsheet and, I'll admit, on
two
pieces of cardboard on my desk. Also, TP EDI info is (and had better be)
maintained in your EDI translator, whatever that may be.”
Answer: WhoisEDI provides a tool where each trading partner maintains is own

information (think of WHOIS for the Internet Domain Name). This information
is
shared between partners after a mutual agreement. So if a trading partner is

part of 5000 trading partner lists on WhoisEDI, it changes his information
once
and everybody is informed in real time.
Samantha says : “If I were to tell them who I work for and
who all my trading partners were then who's to say they wouldn't be selling
all that info to SPS or the like who'd try to use it to make inroads here. ”
Answer: We have a very strict Privacy Policy. We will NEVER share, sell,
rent
or give any information to third parties or anybody. We secure your data in
multiple ways so they are always safe. The only persons who will have access
to
your precious data are the trading partners that you will have confirmed.
Leah says: “Also, unless all of your TP's sign up for this paid service,
you're
not going to "Be notified as soon as your trading partner changes a critical

piece of their

EDI information."”
Answer: Exactly! This is why it is important that every organizations doing
EDI
register their IDs.
Jason says: “At best the expiration date on AS2 certificates is usually what

causes more problems than EDI addresses. However, keeping a close eye on
997s
sent (or missing) from the TP can be helpful in alerting you to an EDI
address
change.”
Answer: Keeping an eye on 997 is something everybody should do. WhoisEDI or
not! This is not the role of WhoisEDI to replace 997s.
Ken asked: “I'm sorry but I'm really not sure how this service can help me
save
time and money looking for lost documents I generated on my own EDI system
or
those from trading partners sending documents with my TP id..”
Answer: WhoisEDI is there to prevent lost documents in the first place. Your

documents may goes trough multiple networks. With a central, global and
unique
database of EDI identifier, the work of everybody involved in the process of

tracking lost documents will be greatly facilitate. We also provide a Web
Service interface to communicate directly with your ERP to communicate
changes
about your trading partners.
Ken also asked: “I really do have to ask Mr LaMarche, has he or anyone at
WHOISEDI ever actually ran an EDI system?”
Answer: Most WhoisEDI employees are coming from different part of the EDI
world
(VAN, EDI coordinator, etc).
Chris asked: “Why would I do this registration? Can’t think of a reason.”
Answer: To facilitate the communication with your EDI trading partners.

If you have any other questions, comments, or anything else, you are more
then
welcome to contact us at 1-800-565-5335 or by email at [email protected]

One thing I love about these discussions is that you learn a lot about the
EDI world you may not have actually dealt with personally. To be forewarned
is to be fore armed, and whether that scares you or not, I would rather know
about it ahead of time than learn about it after the fact. The complexity
of EDI requires a lot of these kinds of dialogue so I am glad they take
place regardless.

When or IF that happens, that usually means someone internally got the wrong
customer Id on the order which according to our EDI system is still not an
error because even the wrong customer Id can belong to a valid EDI customer.

But still not understanding how my spending $79 and change to register my TP
id on an external site is going to keep me from transmitting my 810 to the
wrong TP...

And if I send the 856 to the wrong TP and you're not on top of things (like
Jason mentioned checking for the 997 or even easier have your 997 timeout
set correctly), most retailers have a wonderful correction mechanism called
a chargeback. Then you can explain to your management why the company got
this chargeback fee for ASN not arrive on the largest shipment in company
history...

Perhaps it's time for Philipe LaMarche to return and address some of our
questions and concerns...

Just clicked on the FAQ. I particularly like this one:

The identifier I am already using appears to have been registered by another

company....

Congratulations, you just saved a lot of money! You now know that your EDI
ID
is not safe to use! Send us an email using the Contact Us link and tell us
the
ID you tried to register. We will contact you very shortly to help you
resolve
the situation. Or you can simply change your EDI ID.

Only $79.97 per year per EDI identifier.

In my experience "Avoid sending business-critical documents to the wrong EDI

address!" is very seldom the issue.

And, "With your self-maintained....", what value is this? I have a "self

Unless Mr. Lamarche, you're going to be polling every business doing EDI
