I know it's probably impractical, but the "correct" option is to work with your partner on the subject of "Principles of EDI" during which he will learn that conveying two pieces of information should be done using two distinct data elements. Another option , which "may" be practical, is to use a redefinition of your target into two fields, mapping substrings of the X12 element to them.
