Normal practice is if they are the customer to do exactly what they ask you to do in such situation, if at all possible. I know that sounds glib, but its true. It doesn't count when you are doing what is "right", "normal", "customary" if its not what they want. Explaining why your idea is better than their's isn't generally fruitful either. Just trying to save you some aggravation.
Ask them what they would like you to do in these cases and then do that.
