Brian,

That was my initial thought as well (although I refrained from commenting ;).

Obviously, with completely flexible parties on both sides (like that ever
happens), a simple change in the Element Separator is a snap. While it happens
less and less, I still have customers whose Trading Partner INSISTS that they
only want to/expect to see an asterisk as an Element Separator. Or at least
that's what's in their IG that was written 12 years ago and no one in their EDI
department wants to deal with any exceptions. Or even more likely, it's what's
in their legacy EDI systems that no one knows how to handle nor do they want to
bring in their consultant to change one little thing.

In my early days (as an EDI Coordinator), I got pretty good at writing polite
but firm e-mails to our buyers that they needed to use '+' instead of '*' in
their Text Messages (for NTE or MSG) and/or Product Descriptions.

Matt
