Just to put this into perspective, as Excel does take an unfair amount of
criticism, McCullough also looked at the statistical accuracy (or
reliability) of SPSS, S-Plus & SAS, packages that are held in high regard,
simply because of their long version history. The two articles are available

The results may suprise many people who do not question the accuracy of hese
packages. As McCulloch states, "the reliability of statistical software
cannot be taken for granted"...
