A fellow poster suggested that statistician John W. Tukey may have once
referred to an Old Testament example where simple statistics were used to
estimate: Several people count the layers of stone in a distant wall and
then find the median to get the length of storming ladders right.

Has anyone seen this in any of Tukey's books or articles? If so, which one?
