As was mentioned in the "Industrial Physicist" paper I cited earlier,
the USPTO has recently made efforts to crack down on the issuing
of patents to what could be classified as "basic science". There
were controversial cases, particularly in biotech, that have
prompted them to review their policies. I don't know to what
extent this will affect future statistics-related algorithms like those
you cited here.
