Dennis Roberts (and others) have made comments and raised questions about
group projects and competition. If you haven't already done so, you should
read a couple of books by Alfie Kohn about this:
Punished By Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A's,
Praise, and Other Bribes
and
No Contest : The Case Against Competition
Both books talk about how group learning is better than individual grades
and competition. He has some more recent books about education which I have
not read.
Alfie Kohn has a quite radical message, but he backs his opinions with a lot
of solid research.
