I must say that I do not unstand your question. The second formula looks
like a standard least square line fitting with weighting.

I would say hold the bi until the first formula is solved. But the first
formula???

It might be easier to derive the fitting "plane" formula in the format of z
i = a + b xi + c yi, which still looks like a "line",  instead of "all
matrices" thinking.

BTW,  if you do not have reference books on hand, you might want to check
with www.eFunda.com and search for "least square". Thay may not have exactly
what you need, but it is a point to start.
