Richard,

There are several software that will do either automatic or manual =
coding of open-ended questions. First, I would like to suggest our own =
software named WordStat that has been created to analyze responses to =
open-ended questions other textual information (journal articles or =
abstracts, email, news, interview transcript). This analysis can be =
done either automatically or manually. =20

Probably one of the most unique feature of WordStat is its close =
integration with a statistical software (The cost for both modules is =
only about $230). This integration allows you to examine possible =
associations between text variables and any other variable (sex, age, =
subgroups, response to another variable, etc.). You can get a fully =
functional version of both programs from the following Web site:

  www.simstat.com

There are also several other excellent content analysis and qualitative =
analysis software on the market. You can get a comprehensive list from =
the following URL:=20

http://www.intext.de/TEXTANAE.HTM

If you have a change, try to get a copy of:

Alexa, Melina. & Zuell, Cornelia. (1999). A review of software for =
text analysis. Mannheim: Zuma.

There should be a link to the Zuma web site at the above URL.

Hope this help.
