Dear edstat readers,

Did I get your attention? Good, because this is really important. Below is a
message I received yesterday from the postmaster at NC State regarding the
edstat list. This is a final notice that the list will be discontinued if
complaints to the postmaster about spam messages do not stop.

The postmaster has suggested three possible remedies. Moderating the list is
not a possibility for us. I do not believe that filters for keywords would be
an effective solution. This leaves us with his first remedy -- to limit
postings to subscribers. I would rather not do this, but I'm out of ideas. So
we are going to try this. I realize this is a problem for newsgroup readers
who do not want to subscribe to edstat. If you find that you cannot post
messages to the group, one solution might be to subscribe to the digest version
of the list, and simply delete the one message that you will receive each day.

There are sure to be problems as we implement this. PLEASE send your
complaints to me, and not to the postmaster! If you value this list at all, I
beg you not to complain about any aspect of this to the postmaster, or you
really will kill the list for the rest of us.

We have a problem concerning the edstat-l list that runs on
jse.stat.ncsu.edu. I've been told that you are the owner of that list
and can help us resolve it.

For some time now, we have been getting complaints from one of the
subscribers (YYYYY) of edstat-l for every
unsolicited bulk email (spam) that goes through the list. Up until
now, we have been ignoring him. Unfortunately, we have now started
getting more and more complaints, and from several different people,
and can no longer put them aside.

So in order to be good net citizens, we must ask you to take
appropriate action to your list in order to address these complaints
and stop the flow of spam. Several different ways come to mind:

*) Close your list to accept only mail from subscribers.
*) Moderate your list, requiring manual intervention before an
email is sent to the list.
*) Add filters that require a certain keywords--"statistics" or
"education" for example--before the email will be sent. Rejected
mail would come with instructions on how to bypass the filters.

Thank you for taking the time to resolve this issue. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact us at XXXXX.
