If you've no previous knowledge about logistic regression, Hosmer and 
Lemeshow's would be a good intro. However, you do need basic statistical 
knowledge. Then, you can move on to Agresti's Categorical Data Analysis (Wiley, 
1990). For sample size calculation, you need to read papers. You can also buy 
software that does sample size determination.
