Hi,
The subject title may be a little extreme, but I do wish to get your
attention and ask for your feedback.
I am doing research for my company in the area of college and
university textbook publishing, specifically to understand the
economics and market for professors and departments wishing to publish
a textbook for their classes.
I do plan to contact university presses and publishing companies to get
their perspective.
However, I certainly would like to get the perspectives and actual
experiences from professors who have published, or are thinking about
publishing, a textbook for use in their classes, and possibly for
marketing to other universities and colleges.
Specific questions I'd like to ask include:
1) The cost quoted to you to get a certain print run. This would
include all services including final printing. Who quoted the price?
2) Did (or will) your department pay for the publishing and printing
costs? Is it expected that the costs will be recovered from textbook
sales to the students who take your classes?
3) If your university has an in-house press, are you required by the
university to publish your textbook through them?
Anyway, I appreciate any feedback you can give. It will be useful to
our company as we plan to offer alternative and very cost-competitive
services in this area.
