I compare the properties of computers and calculators for statis-
tical analysis in a paper (1998, sec. 8). The comparison sug-
gests that computers are preferred to calculators on most impor-
tant properties. Thus I recommend that students who have access
to computers purchase computer software for statistical analysis
instead of purchasing a calculator.
Two inexpensive software products for statistical analysis that
are frequently used by students are DataDesk and Minitab. (Both
products are sometimes bundled with introductory statistics text-
books.)
