International Association for Statistical Education

Carol Blumberg from Winona State University and I have recently become
national correspondents for the United States for the International
Association for Statistical Education. The role of national
correspondents is to promote communication between statistics educators
in each country and the IASE. We will occasionally pass on information
about IASE activities that concern teaching and learning statistics.
In turn, please let us know about statistics education activities that
should be reported to the world-wide network of statistics educators in
the IASE.

The International Association for Statistical Education (IASE) is a
section of the International Statistical Institute (ISI). The IASE
seeks to advance statistics education at all levels, from primary
school through the training of professionals. The IASE has a web site
at http://www.cbs.nl/isi/iase.htm that provides information useful to
anyone involved with statistics education. In addition to information
about the IASE and the ISI, the site has links to relevant conference
web sites, teaching resources including sources of data, information on
statistical packages, international statistical societies, national
data archives, and discussion lists.

Membership in IASE

IASE members become part of an international community interested in
the improvement of statistics education at all levels. Members can
both contribute to innovations and progress in statistics education and
learn from colleagues. Members receive various publications free and
discounted rates on others, as well as discounted rates at IASE
meetings. If you are not already a member of IASE, I strongly urge you
to consider joining IASE. At current exchange rates, dues are only US
$24.00 per year. The IASE membership form is available from the IASE
web site.

International Meetings

The Association places a strong emphasis on international cooperation
and the exchange of information via its publications and meetings. The
IASE provides opportunities for its members to attend international
meetings on statistics education on an annual basis. These occur
through a series of conferences organised or sponsored by the IASE;
these are held in venues that are as widely dispersed as possible so
that they will be accessible to delegates from many different
geographical locations.

The major events organized by the IASE are the International
Conferences on Teaching Statistics, ICOTS, which are held every fourth
year and cover all aspects of statistics education. The next, ICOTS-6,
is being held in Durban, South Africa, in July 2002. Another major
event is the Round Table Conference, held every four years, which
concentrates in a particular research topic. Information about these
and other international meetings is available at
http://www.swin.edu.au/maths/iase/meetings.html

ISI Development Fund

One of the aims of the ISI is to promote the quality of statistics
internationally. As developing countries are in the greatest need for
such improvement, ISI considers it as its duty to provide assistance to
statisticians from developing countries in achieving this improvement.
For this purpose, the ISI Executive Committee has established the ISI
Development Fund, which may assist its members, including those in the
IASE, from developing countries to attend conferences. Information
about this fund can be found at http://www.cbs.nl/isi/devfundtxt.htm

IASE Statistical Education Research Group (IASE SERG) and Newsletter
(IASE SERN)

Promoting research is also one of IASE's most pressing priorities, as a
way of extending knowledge about the processes of teaching and learning
statistics and of advancing the academic recognition of statistics
education as a discipline. The IASE Statistical Education Research
Group (IASE SERG) is a special interest group within the IASE; it is
open to all with an interest in this area. It publishes the IASE
Statistical Education Research Newsletter (IASE SERN) three times a
year, which includes short papers of general interest, summaries of
research papers, books, and recent dissertations, bibliographies on
specific topics, information concerning recent and forthcoming
conferences, and internet resources of interest. The Newsletter is
located at the web site http://www.ugr.es/local/batanero/sergroup.htm
(All web pages mentioned in this message are available from the IASE
page at http://www.cbs.nl/isi/iase.htm)
