Going beyond most elementary presentations, the SPSS 
Rank-procedure gives you a choice of four different standard formulas.
Assuming you can read files in .pdf-format, try the algorithms page --

That lists 4 terse references; the newest is Chambers et al (1983).
Assuming it is a book and not an article, that is probably:  John M
Chambers with Kleiner and Tukey, "Graphical Methods for Data
Analysis."
