well, it may or may not mean giving up the right to average ... are you 
suggesting that simply by having say a 4 point scale ... SA ... A .... D 
... SD ... 4, 3, 2, 1 ... always coding in the most positive way ... gives 
us the right TO average?

i didn't think it was quite that simple ...

of course ... even in this scheme ... over a 20 item scale ... let's say 
that the mean works out to be 2.5 per item ... does this clarify things? 
seems like you are still in a pickle of a situation ... though maybe the 
pickle is not quite as dill
