Read more than one. Here are some that I got
some value from, though I do have arguments
with all of them in places. Some are getting
very old. There's a fairly current Conover, though,
so you should at least be able to find it.
- Distribution-Free Tests, H.R. Neave and P.L. Worthington
I quite like Neave and Worthington's discussion
of hypothesis testing, but their book then tends
to go a bit heavy on the recipes at times.
- Practical Nonparametric Statistics, W. J. Conover
Conover's book is a good all round book, but it's
not my favourite for a variety of reasons.
- Nonparametric Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences,
Sidney Siegel, N. John Castellan
- Nonparametric and Distribution-Free Methods for the Social Sciences,
Marascuilo and McSweeney
- Distribution-free statistical tests, J.V. Bradley
Now very old, but some parts of his discussion I haven't seen
elsewhere
- Nonparametrics: statistical methods based on ranks,
E. L. Lehmann
