Hi, some books are using the idea that there are three kinds of scientific
studies: Observational, Experimental mensurative and Experimental manipulative.
My doubt is....In
the case of a project on water quality before and after an
accidental oil spill, is this an
experimental and manipulative study ?
This is and experiment because the "before" samples
can act as controls and the "after" samples are the treatment. The
question is, the environment was manipulated but this was not planned by
the researcher and some places (samples) can have
different oil quantities. As I can see in this case, the researcher are not
controlling all the experiment and then I consider it as a mensurative
experiment.
Then, can an experiment to be considered
manipulative only when the researcher are planning how to manipulate the
samples or.... we can consider the example I gave as a manipulative
experiment ?
Thanks for any comments !!!
