1. i am sure you have very limited time so, what you do needs to be focused 2. you need to have them think about ... generate ... some questions ... notions ... hypotheses about a few things ... something perhaps of interest to them ...and then 3. have them gather and/or find some data ... that would allow them to do a bit of simple (very simple) analysis ... and see what answers they might get to their questions ... notions ... or hypotheses generated in 2
if you are trying to use this as ONE vehicle to helping them lean more towards doing math at the university ... then you had better take this one shot and let them do something of interest to them ... and show how some statistical approach might help them find out more about this interest i assume that in a camp setting ... you will have to have them working in small groups ... so, the topics they come up with will have to be of interest to all/most within the small groups ... if you have several different groups ... i would suggest that you control a bit ... what each group does ... so that you don't get 5 groups doing the same thing ... 1 might do a little sampling project (survey and look at the data), another might do a little quick and dirty experiment ... and look at how you would analyze data in a situation like this ... another might do some simulation project ... then they can all share at the end At 03:13 PM 3/14/02 -0300, Dan Ryan wrote: >I am a new statistics faculty and our Math dept is having a >"Math Camp".
