In most cases I've come across the problem a sample of work is
checked (or even double marked) across markers (and commonly within
scripts from a single marker) to check consistency. In addition to
acting as a check on consistency it also makes it fairly easy to
spot systematic differences between markers (e.g., the markers tend
to differ on very poor scripts).
