The utility (of lack thereof) of dichotomizing continuous variables is nicely discussed in: "On the practice of dichotomization of quantitative variables, Psychological Methods, 2002, 7: 19-40, authored by MacCallum et al. Elliot pretty much summarized the position of the authors of this paper when he said: "you're simply throwing away information; what could possibly be gained?"
