I have used experimental design statistics for performance evaluation and
quality assurance applications.  For example, you have a set of systems that
you want to determine has the best cost/performance ratio... design an
experiment to help you figure out which one is "the winner".  When you run
performance benchmarks, how do you determine if the observered performance
difference is due to a difference in the systems or due to random error?

Performance monitoring also has quite a few applications as well.
