I think the original poster's questions were perfectly legit ... but, we as
educators can't keep this from happening ... that is, what is in the
popular press and what is in professional outlets.

We also need to think about what the actual profession does to make this
situation worse ... that is, INSIST on publication which is equated with
worth ... which puts huge pressure on people to not only produce "data" but
disseminate data.

Then there is the entire "review" process that is flawed ... there is no
way any editor can keep bad stuff from his or her journal or outlet. It
MAYbe that he/she can keep SOME of the bad stuff submitted out but, not
all. Even with the review process and revisions ... can't make something
great that was not initially (though it may be possible to make it look
better).

The ENTIRE system is flawed ... with:

1. lack of required learning of fundamental facts/concepts/principles
2. lack of knowledge of those doing the teaching (sometimes)
3. the over reliance and stress placed on "research" and "publishing" even
in areas where the potential for good is SOOOO trivial
4. the "gratis" review process that is laden with problems and conflicts of
interest

etc. etc.
