Teaching Assistant Professor Positions in Statistics...

The Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University invites applications for TWO non-tenure track positions at the Assistant Professor level starting August 2003. These positions are ideal for candidates with strong interest in teaching and developing pedagogical methods who seek the environment of a Research I university. The primary responsibility of each position is to teach three or four courses a semester. Our course offerings are very broad and include undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics, biomathematics, and bioinformatics, as well as service courses for students from agriculture and life sciences, engineering, textiles, physical and mathematical sciences, social sciences, and other programs on campus.

Service to the profession and to the department, especially in the area of statistics education, is encouraged. Possible areas of activity include, but are not limited to, developing teaching materials, carrying out research on pedagogical methods, coordinating multi-section courses, preparing and mentoring teaching assistants, outreach to K-12 students and teachers, and mentoring students participating in undergraduate research experiences. The nominal teaching load is four courses a semester, but a typical load would be three courses plus responsibility in one of the above-listed areas. For example, a current Assistant Professor in this type of position teaches three courses per semester and supervises a group of graduate student instructors. The initial appointment is for five years. Based on performance, the positions are renewable, and promotions in rank are possible. The department is committed to fostering long term positions for faculty whose emphasis is on teaching.

The Department of Statistics is one of the nation's oldest and largest statistics departments and is known for its blend of research in statistical theory and applications. The Journal of Statistics Education was founded in the department. Many of its faculty belong to the NCSU Academy of Outstanding Teachers. The Department's location in the Research Triangle provides rich opportunities for interactions with industry, other universities and colleges, and government agencies.
