you might want to consider some existing software that has a long history of doing exactly what you are trying to find out ... there are a number of packages that do this sort of analysis

i think trying to understand the "how" of some of these algorithm routines is great BUT, i am not sure that trying to figure out the "programming" of these will be beneficial ...

but that's just my opinion
