Back in October, Scott Millis posted a query on the impact of the HIPAA Privacy Rule on research, particularly regarding the then approaching deadline, which was for the transaction components of HIPAA and not the privacy components as discussed.
On December 4, 2002 the Dept of Health and Human Services Office of Civil Rights, which will be the oversight body within HHS relative to HIPAA, posted a new guidelines document which contains good information and FAQ's pertaining to the Privacy Rule. Important information specifically on research begins on page 85 of the full document. This document has been updated to reflect the recent changes in the Privacy Rule. The document is available as a .PDF file (either complete or by section) for download at: http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/hipaa/privacy.html Hope this will be of help to folks.
