There was a more complete answer - yesterday - posted by
someone in sci.stat.math  where the original question appeared
separately.  That is, it was not cross-posted, which is the better
way to do it.

I note that JB intended to crosspost the followup question, 
above.  By bad luck, the other name  was written with 'math'  
as 'maths'.
