That is called RECODE.  
RECODE varx(1,2=1)(3=2)(4,5=3) into varxx .

- You should find, anywhere, a Primer for SPSS.
- The SPSS group, more appropriate for SPSS 
questions,  is 
  comp.soft-sys.stat.spss
