sure, we DO overlay grades on top of the scores ... we use the scores to make our decision about the grades ... but, fundamentally ... the role of a test as part of instruction has to be in terms of feedback ...
that's the major way (and in some courses the ONLY way) feedback is given about student work ... and without it (though some instructors do a lot more with this than others) ... how is the student supposed to improve?
