My thanks to all who offered suggestions. When my colleague approached me, he said "I have an easy statistical question." Red flags immediately went up. The question may have been easy, but as your responses have indicated, the answer is not.

A sidelight to my query was an exchange between Robert Dawson and Rich Ulrich regarding the word "minuscule," a.k.a. "miniscule." Interestingly, that word was recently the topic of Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day, which is at
