Ronny Richardson has provided a neat little trick for inserting x-bar and other statistical
notation when using Microsoft's Word.
If,however, if one writes quite a bit of statistical notation and/or formula, Word is totally
inadequate.  Far superior is WordPerfect with its Equation [and symbol] Editor -- a feature Word totally lacks.

Another alternative -- especially for those wedded to Word -- is buying an equation/symbol editor
add-on.  There are several available, no doubt, but the one I have used when it was necessary to compose in Word
is MathType.  For information about this product, click on http://www.mathtype.com.
