I lost track of the original query, but someone was asking about a study
by Freiman et al. I talk about this on my web pages at

http://www.childrens-mercy.org/stats/journal/mountain.asp

I link to the NEJM article, but a better version appears as a chapter in
a wonderful book:

Medical Uses of Statistics Second Edition. John C. Bailar III, Frederick
Mosteller (1992) Boston, Massachusetts: NEJM Books.

My web page is currently undergoing major revisions, but I do discuss
the Freiman study because it highlights (as have many other studies) the
problem of inadequate sample sizes in most research studies.

I'm trying to find some more recent studies that support the same
conclusion, and I put a few tentative references on that page. But if
anyone has a good reference that shows the problems with sample sizes,
please let me know.
