which brings up a related issue ... ie, using someone else's data for YOUR purposes

many times, it seems much more convenient (and is i am sure) to "find" a data set that will meet your needs ... that is, fit into what your research questions/hypotheses might be ... BUT, going along with the current discussion ... does NOT give you any real control over HOW the data were gathered and actually WHAT was gathered

these are good examples of how one might do this error checking ... or pre analysis looking AND, have not a clue as to problems that might exist within the data set

even when you collect your own data ... you might not know of the vagaries of the data BUT, you should be CLOSER to knowing
