For not blacklisting network manager, maybe a better idea would be to create an 
entry like the following in the client /etc/network/interfaces:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual

Network manager then won't manage that interface, and the user will still be 
able to use it to manage VPNs or any other interfaces present.
Of course the interface name won't always be eth0, so it would need to be 
determined on boot.
