You have only changed the default settings that are applied to new (or newly opened) images. For images that are already opened in GIMP, you can change this via the Image menu's Configure Grid option. See http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-concepts-image-grid-and-guides.html #gimp-concepts-image-grid
