For the record, and thanks to Clint, I tried switching the hard drives 
over again to note the error messages, and lo! the system booted
perfectly! If at first you don't succeed...

But we're agreed that for a classroom installation, one really should
use at least software RAID-1 mirroring with /dev/hda1 and /dev/hdc1.
